As soon as the BCCI announced the schedule for IPL 2021, cricket fans all over the country knew that it was time for the bat and ball season. The fans are more hyped than ever. The first match is scheduled for the second week of April between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), everyone is eagerly waiting for the tournament to start. There are still a few days remaining for the return of the big league. Tired of waiting for the IPL to start? If April 9 seems very far away to your bored or overly excited self then let’s take a look back to one of the biggest sports rivalries in cricket. Yes! We are talking about the league’s best teams – Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

The current defending champions, Mumbai Indians, have won the IPL 5 times until now. They are the most dominating team in the league, captained by Rohit Sharma, who also is their highest scorer. Coached by Mahela Jayawardene, the team is preparing to win this tournament. MI is owned by Reliance Industries and is the most expensive team to be sold in the league. The franchise was sold for around $111. 9 million. On the other hand, CSK has grabbed the trophy 3 times. Captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the former captain of the Indian team, they have been the most consistent team throughout the games, gaining the highest win percentage. The team is coached by Stephen Fleming and owned by India Cements. They come second in brand value, MI being in the first place.

The rivalry between the two teams roots back to the beginning of the IPL. MI had Sachin Tendulkar while CSK had Dhoni who had just won the 2007 World T20 and was on rise among the fans. After the 2011 World cup win,  the fans were divided between Dhoni and Sachin. The competitiveness between both franchises makes this rivalry even better. The teams have played each other a total of 30 times in the league, making it the most number of times any 2 teams have faced off each other. Out of the 30, MI has won 18 and CSK has won 12 matches. All the matches saw a higher number of views because of the feuding between the both. Both the franchises come in top merchandise sellers along with RCB. Thus, making this rivalry very profitable for the IPL.

Last season CSK and MI shared the field 2 times resulting in a win for each team. Last year was the first time CSK did not qualify for the playoffs, on the other hand, MI won the final match winning the season. With the 14th season around the corner, everyone is hyped about what comes ahead for both teams. The rivals are going to face off this year on 1st May and 16th May.

We can only hope for some great play and entertainment when the 2 clash.
